My Journey with CML, A Story of Resilience and Transformation – CML : a new beginning
I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) in 2009 during a routine company health check-up. The initial symptoms included weight loss, a swollen spleen, and fatigue. I began treatment with hydroxyurea and have been taking Glivec (Imatinib) for over 15 years now.
At the time of my diagnosis, I had a fulfilling job with the Swatch Group in Thailand. However, the frequent medical consultations and the need for regular check-ups forced me to take numerous leaves, which eventually led to my decision to resign. This period was challenging, both emotionally and financially. I needed a job that would allow me the flexibility to see my doctor regularly while also supporting my financial needs.
Determined to find a suitable career, I underwent travel guide training. Being fluent in Thai, English, and Mandarin made this an ideal choice. The job offered flexibility, allowing me to manage my health appointments while working. Though it was tough and involved leading groups of 20 to 30 people on overseas trips, it provided the financial stability I needed.
During this time, I became connected with the Max Foundation and received invaluable support and information from this patient group. Being part of this community has been a source of immense emotional strength and solidarity.
After number of years in the tourism industry, I now own my travel agency and in the same time have built a network of CML friends worldwide. Not only do I now have friends with CML from around the globe, but I also have a job that I love—one that provides enough income and allows me the flexibility to schedule my medical appointments.
Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the path CML has led me to. It has instilled in me the courage to change my life and has brought me to where I am today. Thank you, CML, for changing my life.
Because of this experience, I am eager to contribute my abilities to any advocacy work. Helping others navigate their journeys with CML and providing support to the community would be a fulfilling way to give back.
I share this experience in the hope of helping other patients stay strong and realize that having CML or any cancer is not the end—it can be a new beginning.
For this coming CML Day 2024, I wish every patient around the world good health and happiness.
