More Than a Patient, he is Just a Little Boy

As a Program Coordinator for The Max Foundation in Nepal, I have a chance to meet and interact with many CML patients during their follow up visits. Each patient has a different story to share. It includes small children also who does not know why they are even at the hospital.
A father of an 8-year-old boy got his son admitted to a hospital agreed to numerous tests that were being conducted every few days. The financial burden grew rapidly, exhausting not only the family’s savings but also the government support they had received in Nepal. Eventually, they were referred to Patan Hospital where a more thoughtful and patient-centered approach was taken. For the first three months, no additional unnecessary tests were performed. Instead, the child was carefully monitored and treated based on clinical need.
Gradually, the transformation was remarkable. A boy who had once spent his days in hospitals and undergoing repeated investigations began to smile again. During follow-up visits, he would proudly show his video games and mark sheet to his physician and to me, sharing small moments of joy that reflected his growing confidence and well-being.
Today, that child is nearly 15 years old. He is pursuing his studies, enjoys spending time with his elder brother, and is living a happy and fulfilling life. One day, out of curiosity, he searched online and discovered information about his diagnosis. By then, his family had already built a strong foundation of trust, love, and resilience. They handled the situation with remarkable care, gradually helping him understand his condition in an age-appropriate manner while ensuring that his dreams and identity were never defined by his illness.
Their journey is a powerful reminder that quality care is not measured by the number of tests performed, but by compassionate clinical judgment, timely treatment, and the support that allows a child to simply be a child again.
