The Power of Still Being Here

I am Nury Esperanza Villalba Suárez, a nurse specialized in hospital management, blogger, and podcaster. In 2004, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), an event that transformed my life and gave me a deeper purpose.

“I asked myself: What are these people who were going to die and are now alive doing with their lives?” — Dr. Brian Druker

This question, simple yet profound, opens a story that is not only about science but also about humanity. Dr. Brian Druker, a pioneer, changed the course of CML and the lives of thousands, mine included. His words invite us to look beyond diagnosis, to honor the humanity that remains intact, and to choose how to live. A CML diagnosis does not define destiny; it can open the door to a fuller and more meaningful life.

Dr. Druker, in response to your question, I say: with this second chance, I have chosen to live with intensity and purpose. For 21 years, I have worked to defend the rights of people with cancer in Colombia. Cancer does not discriminate, yet barriers still prevent timely, safe, and quality access to treatments people truly need.

Writing became my way to resist, to heal, and to give voice to what often stays hidden: silenced pain, daily injustices, and stories that deserve to be told.

Along the way, I traveled, laughed wholeheartedly, shared many coffees in good company, said “I love you” openly, and embraced moments that made me feel profoundly alive. In the end, what remains are those moments that touch our souls and remind us we are still here, beating with purpose.

Today, with conviction, I dedicate myself to Married to the Crab, a project that seeks to build bridges of experience and accompany with dignity those who face cancer.
